The Herschel Retreat House is located in Herschel, SK which is 25 minutes from Rosetown, 45 minutes from Kindersley, 90 minutes from Saskatoon and the Battlefords.
The opportunity came up to purchase the Herschel Retreat House in early 2017 from original owners and builders, Dave and Sue Neufeld. They had a vision and had laid out all the groundwork to make The Herschel Retreat House a unique gathering spot in our little rural hamlet of Herschel, SK, but the time had come for their retirement path to become priority for them.
A vast majority of the home was reclaimed with great care from the Herschel grain elevators and pieces of old beautiful furniture with rich family history were incorporated. Great care was taken to salvage grain sculpted boards that were re-purposed as railings and mouldings throughout the home.
Run your hand up and down these boards to feel the deep ridges made from prairie grain
The house shares all the values that are important to us. It brings us together as a community, it allows people the opportunity to gather and visit in a safe and comfortable space, and it was also built and is still maintained with the environment kept in mind. We had used the house numerous times before purchasing it to host our own family and friends and it just seemed like a seamless fit to enhance our rural farming life.
The Herschel Retreat House is a hub where connections can intermingle
This home is unique because it is just so unexpected! Herschel sits nestled in the Eagle Creek valley, spreading up onto the hills to the south. Herschel offers rich history of valley ecology, fascinating fossil finds and the beautiful scenery. The hills surrounding Herschel; that’s right, it is not just flat prairie around Herschel! were once the home to the Blackfoot and GrosVentres First Nation. There are vast prairie landscapes surrounding the property with beautiful sunsets and wonderful opportunities to star gaze. There is also rich indigenous history, unique dinosaur finds and wonderful true tales involving a Earl and the hunt for a plains grizzly bear in the Herschel Hills.
These can all be explored further at the nearby Interpretive Centre.
